PIE Minutes

August Minutes

The Parents in Education (PIE) of Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School met for their monthly meeting on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at 6:30 pm in the gym at the school. Members present included Molly Brown, Jody Schendel, Janet Idema, Ayaan Thomas, Lynn Eby, Amy Orwig, Sarah Popp, and Betsy Schoelerman.

Jody gave the treasurer’s report and discussion was held on costs associated with sending the teachers to LEA in October. We have already paid the initial deposit. Jody will get gift cards from the Script program for the teachers to use for meals and PIE will also pay mileage to Webster City and for hotels during the conference.

In old business, we discussed sponsoring the ISU Insect Zoo to come to IGLLS in the fall. Betsy will work on securing a date. Janet provided a written update on the yearbook. This year there were 22 yearbooks sold. They were delivered on 8/8/22. The school receives a small amount of profit on each yearbook and that check will be mailed in 1 to 3 weeks. Discussion was held on how to better promote the yearbook. Ideas included displaying past copies of the yearbook at back to school conferences and the back to school picnic, having an order form at the spring concert, and taking direct orders at the point if people don’t wish to make custom pages. Janet also said that she, Lynn, and Jody will be transitioning out of preparing the yearbook after this year as they all have 6th grade students. We will need new people to take over!

In new business Betsy shared Sign-Up Genius lists that she created including one for recess duty, popcorn Fridays, and general volunteer opportunities. She will also create a flyer for educational opportunities with QR codes if families would like to donate to help PIE provide these for our students. These will also be available via hard copy at the back-to-school conferences.

Next, we discussed the back to school picnic. Ideas for entertainment for the kids were discussed as well as the possibility of having an informational meeting during the picnic to share details about PIE, the Script program, and general school procedures. Mrs. Popp will share these ideas with the staff and get their feedback.

Molly will check into getting a massage therapist to come on August 22 and provide the teachers with chair massages. This would be a rescheduled date from the date that was canceled in May.

Next, we talked about providing a “surprise and delight” for the students by having a DJ at recess. We have a few dads in mind to ask to help with this. Mrs. Popp will help with the sound system.

The last new business item was back-to-school conferences. PIE will staff an information table from 11:00-6:00. Betsy will create a sign-up for members to sign up for 1 hour shifts.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, September 25th at 6:30 pm.
