This year, we are going to, "Let our Lights Shine!" We will study Bible Stories from the Old and New Testament, including Creation, Abraham, Noah, and Jesus's miracles and ascension. In math, we will be working on learning math facts, adding and subtracting all the way up to three-digits, word problems, and using manipulatives to solve. We are learning both procedural and conceptual thinking when it comes to math! We use small groups guided reading and writing, and VoWac Phonics and Spelling. Students read and work on reading skills to aid in accuracy, fluency, and comprehension, while reading fiction and non-fiction books. We use Fast Testing to help us assess and monitor reading accuracy and fluency. We study grammar, write friendly letters, write daily journals, write paragraphs, and write narrative, opinion, and informative writings using writer's workshop. For Science, we focus on many topics: plants, animal habitats, and states of matter. We get to melt ice, do a bubble experiment, build dams and bridges, and more! In social studies, we study history, learn map skills, study economics, and more. We finish off our year, with a field trip in April to the Prairie Heritage Center, where we get to hike, learn more about animal habitats and pioneers, and see the buffalo! Second Grade Rocks!!
